Toyota Unveils 2012 Camry

The revamped 2012 Camry made its debut at Toyota's Georgetown plant Tuesday. Company executives hope the new design, its first in five years, will jumpstart sales after a series of setbacks in recent years. Georgetown Toyota plant president Wil James unveiled the latest version of Toyota's top sedan to a large gathering of employees. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky chairman Steve St. Angelo was also hand to generate enthusiasm for the redesign, which he hopes will send a clear signal to the industry.

"This car is a symbol that team Toyota is back, and they're better, and they're stronger," he said.

Hit by the recession, a series of safety recalls starting in 2009, and production and supply interruptions following the recent tsunami in Japan, Toyota has managed to maintain Camry's status as the top-selling car in the U.S., but competition in the sedan market from Nissan, Ford, and others has Toyota looking to rekindle interest in the Camry. With a number of new jobs being added, Toyota's Georgetown plant will employ close to 7400 people.

The 2012 Camry will be available to consumers in October.
