The Lexington city council voted Thursday night to ask state and county officials to waive penalties and fees for delinquent property tax payments from Fayette County landlords. The approval of the resolution comes as coronavirus continues to impact tenants and their ability to pay rent.
Greater Lexington Apartment Association Director Brenda Wells said some landlords are struggling to pay bills and staff. She noted waiving penalties for late property tax payments would help.
“Anything at this point in time with rent being so slow coming in, any way that they can save some money of course will be helpful to the landlords,” said Wells.
Wells said some landlords may oversee 500 units or more and so the property taxes can be significant. The council resolution encourages the state revenue cabinet, plus the Fayette County sheriff, clerk, and attorney to facilitate the waiver of fees and penalties.
Wells said the flowing of rental assistance dollars to landlords and tenants has been slower than anticipated.
“As the city has moved into this new neighborly portal software program and they’re getting that up and running, and they now have more staff available, we are certainly hoping that the process will go a lot faster,” noted Wells.
Wells explained that will enable the landlords to get paid and tenants get caught up on their rent. She said that will help prevent evictions in Lexington.
