Target Offers Italian Designs At A Bargain Price

DAVID GREENE, Host:

And our last word in business today, is Missoni for the masses. In the spotlight of New York's Fashion Week, Target saw an opportunity. The retailer approached the high-end Italian design house Missoni with the idea of making a lower priced line of clothing and accessories to launch during Fashion Week. Missoni's colorful zigzag knit dresses - at least I'm told - normally sell at places like Saks Fifth Avenue for maybe $1,000 or more. A Missoni designer, a granddaughter of the founder, told The Wall Street Journal she had actually never even set foot in a Target before this collaboration.

STEVE INSKEEP, Host:

Yesterday, Target rolled out its Missoni line, and frugal fashionistas across the country stormed Target stores - clearing shelves of the bargain couture. David, I wondered where you were for four hours yesterday.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

GREENE: You found out now.

INSKEEP: Now we know. They nabbed dresses for $55 - it looks great on you, by the way...

GREENE: Appreciate that, Steve.

INSKEEP: ...and ran off in trendy ballet flats that sells for hundreds of dollars, normally, for a mere 30 bucks.

GREENE: The demand was so strong that Target's website was shut down for much of the day, which made things difficult to keep buying. Steve, some buyers don't even plan to wear these items. Many of the goods are already on eBay for several times the Target price.

INSKEEP: Oh.

GREENE: And that's the business news on MORNING EDITION from NPR News this morning. I'm David Greene.

INSKEEP: And I'm Steve Inskeep. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
