President Obama will visit New York City tomorrow to honor those killed at Ground Zero on September 11, 2011, following the slaying of Osama bin Laden. Politico reports he invited former President George W. Bush and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Guiliani to join him. Mr. Bush has declined the invitation; Politico says there's no word on Mr. Guiliani's decision, but current mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to attend.
There's concern about flooding on the Mississippi River after a levee was breached to spare an Illinois town. The AP reports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is watching record flooding levels and could break holes in other levees downriver if people are threatened in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Foreign Policy says Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's troops could be charged with crimes against humanity. The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court informed the UN Security council that hundreds of civilians have been 'systematically' murdered by Gadhafi's troops, saying 'War crimes are apparently committed as a matter of policy'.
Oil corporation BP will pay a $25 million dollar fine to settle a case involving two major oil spills in Alaska. The Wall Street Journal reports BP will also improve its Alaska pipeline network. In 2006, corroded BP pipes led to two separate spills, triggering a shutdown and in turn, a spike in oil prices.
Minnesota Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano has thrown the first no hitter of the major league baseball season. MLB.com savors Liriano's achievement: he'd never thrown a shutout before, heck, he'd never even thrown a complete game. The Twins sank the Chicago White Sox, 1-0, in Chicago. White Sox Observer blogger James Fegan sighs,
Well, it's hard to overstate how embarrassing this is. The White Sox welcomed what was the worst team in baseball (and riding a six-game skid) to U.S. Cellular Tuesday night, and faced Francisco Liriano, a man with a 9.13 ERA coming in who was one start away from possibly being kicked out of the rotation...and not even a good rotation.
And he threw a damn no-hitter.
