Museum goers across Kentucky have different preferences when it comes to how they experience history. Eastern Kentucky University is playing host to more than 60 museum related professionals.
One session of the Kentucky Museum and Heritage Alliance conference carried the title “Designing Museums to Reshape Narratives for Modern Audiences.” Kentucky Historical Society Director Scott Alvey said visitors’ tastes vary. “Some of them want to experience this highly technological experience and some of them like the simplicity of whether a site interpretation or visiting an outdoor museum or attending a food way program,” said Alvey.
Alliance Administrative Assistant Leah Craig said museum visits help long term education outcomes for young learners. One missing link is an accurate number of museums statewide. “We’re doing a questionnaire and trying to start gathering data about all the different museums and trying to track that information, so we’ll have that to be able to go to legislators or other folks and say this is a reflection of the industry and the impact we have on the state,” explained Craig.
Craig said there are well over 100 museums across the Commonwealth.
