Workers at the Blue Grass Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant are expected to begin neutralizing nerve agent in January. Two citizen advisory groups got an update on preparation at the Blue Grass Army Depot facility Wednesday in a meeting on the campus of Eastern Kentucky Universtiy.
Project Manager Candace Coyle said it will be a very deliberative process. “It’s probably been a good ten years since we’ve done any nerve munitions processing and because of that we always like to be very safe and very careful about it. So, as you can imagine the footprint of the main plant is very large and so, we wouldn’t go in and say day one let’s just go start moving munitions through the building.”
Coyle noted by the end of January some nerve agent munitions should be destroyed. Thirteen tons of mustard agent have been destroyed since that operation began last June. In all more than 500 tons of chemical munitions are to be disposed of by the end of 2023.?
