Final preparations are underway in Lexington for the opening of a new Catholic Action Center for homeless men and women. The new site off Industry Road is expected to open in about two weeks.
Center Co-Founder Ginny Ramsey says the converted former government building will offer dignity and safety for homeless persons. She says the 24/7 operation will feature new sleeping, eating, bathing, and transitional services. Ramsey says the center will also offer a recuperation area for those recovering from serious health issues. “I can’t tell you have many people that we have that are really disabled, but they still have to pound the streets,” said Ramsey. “That won’t happen anymore.”
Ramsey says an onsite park area will be a great addition. “Right here on this site where they can rest and relax and enjoy just like anybody else. It’s not a park where people feel like they have to be chasing them off,” noted Ramsey.
The head of the Catholic Action Center since its opening in 2000 says many people have stepped forward to help provide hundreds of sack lunches during the transition from the Fifth Street location to Industry Road.
