Kentucky public university administrators are being asked to work up budget modifications to accommodate a potential 8% reduction in state funding. That scenario comes as the state has seen a great reduction in revenues due to coronavirus.
Council on Postsecondary Education President Aaron Thompson. “We are looking at a way to take the cuts on our campuses without hurting student services and instructional services,” said Thompson.
Thompson said additional federal dollars could help universities cope with any state reductions. He noted the timing of any cut is not known, since the word from the state budget office was to make preparations in case reductions are made.
At Eastern Kentucky University, the 8% cut amounts to more than $5 million. EKU President David McFaddin said, among other things, it would require the Richmond school to be creative in reducing costs and developing revenue streams.
