Efforts to create a railroad based historic and economic stimulation project in central Kentucky continue to move forward.  The latest development involves the first infusion of public funding.

“The Yard” is the name given to a 40 acre development proposed for former railroad property between Irvine and Ravenna.  The idea is to celebrate the region’s railroad heritage while also focusing on arts, food, and music.   Kentucky Steam Heritage President Chris Campbell said the State Energy and Environment Cabinet is providing $120,000 worth of support.  Campbell noted the Estill County project could help draw tourists deeper into eastern Kentucky. “This will be an area that we’re focusing on funneling people into eastern Kentucky through tourism because it’s relatively close to central Kentucky, assess to both I-75 and I-64,” said Campbell.

Campbell said a local oil company is providing key financing for a 4500 person capacity multi-use venue for community gatherings, farmers markets, and concerts.  Also a critical piece of the plan is the restoration of a 75 year old steam locomotive.  Its travel to Ravenna in the summer of 2019 attracted much attention.
