Kentucky State Police officers are participating in the international Roadcheck enforcement blitz. The beefed-up enforcement is part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance program and runs through Thursday. KSP Sergeant Jason Morris said the emphasis this year is on wheel-end components which are critical for stability and braking.
“So, an individual who would be operating that does have a brake failure due to being overloaded, then that does create a problem where he is unable to stop and can cause a catastrophic event through a collision,” said Morris.
Morris said many commercial trucks are carrying close to 80,000 pounds of cargo. The KSP officer noted troopers will be looking for trucks that don’t have the CVSA decal, which indicates timely inspections.
“So, you can just at a quick glance what month that that tractor may have been inspected and when it is checked and that is something that we look at,” said Morris.
The state police officer said Kentucky has seen an uptick in fatalities generally. In addition to checking commercial trucks, Morris added other drivers have the responsibility to give trucks extra room on the interstates.
