FEMA offers service to help recover important family items

FEMA is offering services to help restore important items damaged by April’s severe storms.
The agency’s Save Your Treasures Program trains victims on how to save important personal items like photos, books, documents or textiles. Victims can also be referred to experts for other objects.
“If there's something that's not on their typical boiler plate list of items that they typically salvage, they can refer you to experts that can maybe help you with that particular item,” agency spokesperson Danny Bernardy said.
FEMA preservation teams are available at disaster recovery centers in Frankfort and Lawrenceburg this week. Other locations are planned to have the service in the future.
FEMA spokesperson Danny Bernardy says it’s a way for victims to help their mental health recover.
“Once people find that they're able to salvage some of these items, it's a great way to take control of your recovery and get that feeling of things coming back to normal,” he said.
FEMA says to not bring any damaged objects in person and to bring photos instead. Bringing objects in person could risk further damage.
The recovery center in Frankfort is offering those services from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., May 5-10 and May 12-17. The recovery center in Lawrenceburg is offering those services from May 5-6 and May 9-10, also from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
