For the third time, central Kentucky is playing host to a regular PGA men’s golf tournament. After a one-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Barbasol Championship returns to The Champions course at Keene Trace Golf Club.
Upwards of 40-to-50,000 spectators are expected over four days of play at Champions in Jessamine County. Keene Trace Golf Club General Manager Tyler VanHoose said tournament officials are, “starting to find our groove” year-after-year on the operational side. Not surprisingly, weather can be a big player. “The biggest way to avoid all the headaches is with sunshine. We have a history of this tournament of having plenty of rain and I’m hoping this week, we can get sunshine. Because rain makes everything a lot harder,” said VanHoose.
VanHoose says the field increased by 12 to 136 spots. Among those competing are former PGA Champions John Daly and Jason Duffner.
He noted the economic impact to Fayette and Jessamine Counties will be significant from lodging and eating activities alone. Play at the Barbasol starts Thursday and concludes Sunday.
