Keeneland officials are filling of two new positions at the historic race track. The new hires reflect ab effort Keeneland to strengthen its commitment to the safety of equine and human athletes.
Just four days before the start of this fall’s racing meet, Keeneland named Dr. George Mundy as Equine Safety Director and Jim Perdergest to serve as Director of Racing Surfaces. Their responsibilities will cover both Keeneland’s track facilities and the Thoroughbred Training Center off Paris Pike.
Part of Mundy’s responsibilities will be to develop, communicate, and enforce safety and integrity policies. His job will include reviewing all racing-related accidents with an eye toward prevention, assessing relevant equine health and safety research, and proactively communicating best practices to the racing community and public.
Pendergest has spent 19 years at Keeneland. He has supervised installation of six race tracks, 10 training tracks, and some 20 equine arenas in the U.S. and Canada.
