Candidates for Kentucky’s District Eight State House seat discussed the service tax and other issues in a Hopkinsville debate Thursday night.

Republican Representative Walker Wood Thomas is seeking reelection against Democratic challenger Jeff Taylor. Taylor is looking to reclaim the seat that he briefly held in 2016. He says Thomas voted for the bill that requires businesses and nonprofits to collect sales tax on services.

“They made a mistake that now they too want to correct. They subjected our nonprofits to that. Not only our nonprofits but they also subjected our churches to it. I absolutely want to overturn those too.”

Thomas says he is cosponsoring a pre-filed bill to repeal the legislation and expects to address it at the beginning of the next session.

When Thomas was asked if he supported early voting, he said he did not and used his remaining time to describe his support for gun rights.

On another issue, Jeff Taylor said he would be aggressive in broadening the expungeable class D felony convictions for non-violent offenders.
