Thousands of women, men and children gathered for a rally and march in Lexington Saturday. As WEKU’s Cheri Lawson reports, the afternoon event coincided with the national Women’s March on Washington.
A crowd estimated at over 5000 jammed the city’s Court House Square to hear comments from community organizers, city and state officials, clergy and even the states poet laureate.
Eleven-year-old Izzie Zorn came with her mom, “I am marching for myself and all the women. I want to smash the patriarchy and I’m not going to go quietly back to the 1950s.”
Charla Hylton, from Winchester was one of the organizers of the Lexington rally, “We are going to resist, every time there is a decision that we don’t like, every time there is a decision that interferes with our rights.”
Following the 90-minute rally, participants took to the streets for a march through the city’s center, chanting and holding signs with messages like “Women’s Rights are Human Rights, “ “Love Trumps Hate” and “Equal Pay for Women.”
