Lexington is expanding its Art on the Town program. Starting in March eight mobile art carts will be available to set up primarily in the downtown area. The colorful carts can be used by local artists to sell or demonstrate their work. Heather Lyons is the director of arts and cultural affairs. Lyons said this program offers flexibility for area artists.
“You know the carts can be available seven days a week, different hours of the day and so we will continue to keep building and building and allowing artists to become part of the program,” said Lyons.
Lyons said the carts are ideal for two-d and three-d works. Those items include paintings, wood carvings, jewelry, candles, lotions, soaps, planters, and baskets.
The city’s arts and cultural affairs director said the cart experience goes beyond a purchase.
“Also engage with the artists which I think also really adds a layer of connection when people not only get to purchase works of art or crafts but to meet the artist I think makes it much more meaningful experience,” said Lyons.
Kentucky artists are invited to submit applications and attend an upcoming Artist Orientation Session.
Orientation is required to participate. Sessions will be held on February first and February ninth. Lyons says plans call for adding two more carts.
