Lexington ranks among the top four percent of municipalities nationally for L-G-B-T-Q-Plus equality. That’s according to the national civil rights organization, Human Rights Campaign.

The annual Municipal Equality Index review is based on how inclusive local laws, policies, and services are of their LGBTQ communities. For the second year in a row, Lexington scored the highest in the state. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said, quote, “for the past four years we have worked hard to diminish inequities in our city.”

Lexington received an overall score of 110 this year, compared with 106 last year. The bluegrass community was the first county in the Commonwealth to pass a fairness ordinance in 1999. Other actions include domestic partner benefits for city employees, all-gender signage for city-owned single-occupancy facilities, and a ban on youth-conversion therapy.
