Lexington’s mass transit system has been awarded more than six million dollars in federal funding. It will go to purchase new buses and facility improvements.
The federal funding will go to purchase eight compressed natural gas buses and to upgrade CNG infrastructure at the Lextran Louden Avenue maintenance facility.
Lextran General Manager Jill Barnett said replacing eight diesel buses with the same number of lower emission CNG vehicles will help modernize the fleet and combat climate change. Federal dollars are also included to expand compressed natural gas fueling infrastructure. Lextran says that will increase the capacity for CNG buses in the fleet. The grant also provides funds for workforce development and training, specifically targeted to the maintenance of CNG vehicles.
