Lexington city officials are moving forward with planning and funding for additional public art in the bluegrass community.
Part of the arts-focused ordinance merges the long-standing Urban County Arts Review Board with the Public Art Commission. Members of the Council’s General Government and Social Services Committee heard from Arts and Cultural Affairs Director Heather Lyons last week.
“This plan is specific to public art that is on city-owned property,” said Lyons.
Another revision of the Public Art Master Plan calls for the inclusion of a representative from LexArts, Fayette County’s umbrella arts organization.
Lyons said new public art projects will be outlined through a multi-year process.
“For each of these when it is, as we’re putting that plan together, community groups, neighborhood associations, organizations, there will be a lot of input specific to projects,” said Lyons.
Lyons said the funding mechanism is based on a small percentage of bonded indebtedness. It will not allow for the support of performing arts. She said that issue will still get attention.
