Lexington’s newly adopted ban on no-knock search warrants went into effect Thursday. The new law is the center of legal action taken by Lexington’s police union.
The Lexington Fraternal Order of Police is suing the city, the mayor, and council members in an effort to stop the ban on no-knocks. The suit asks the court to grant a preliminary injunction on the matter. In the lawsuit filed in Fayette Circuit Court, the FOP contends any action to ban no-knock warrants should be discussed during collective bargaining negotiations with police. The suit also states banning no-knocks affects officer safety. It states Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government responded the city is not required to bargain the ordinance banning no-knocks. The mayor, police chief through a public information officer, and two council members said they could not comment on a pending legal matter.
