Some University of Kentucky pharmaceutical researchers are asking the Federal Drug Administration to recall certain lots of an injectable drug. They cite impurities and less than ideal active ingredients in their filing.
A drug study conducted at UK found impurities and lower than acceptable levels of the active pharmaceutical ingredient in some samples of the commonly used injectable drug Acetazolamide. The generic drug is used to treat glaucoma, epilepsy, altitude sickness, and fluid retention.
UK filed a petition asking the FDA to recall identified lots of the medication after samples were found to have more than four times the FDA’s acceptable level of impurities.
UK Vice President for Health Affairs Mark Newman says the university is not aware of any unexpected adverse effects in patients administered this drug, but the findings are concerning. The drug is among the first to be tested as part of UK’s Drug Quality Study.?
