The Lexington community has seen its first lab-confirmed flu case of the 2019-2020 influenza season. Fayette County Health Department Spokesman Kevin Hall said the first case involves a person under 18.
While the greatest risks for serious health complications occur in the very young or very old, Hall noted it’s important for people of all ages to get a flu shot to improve community protection. “Flu shot at its best is going to be 60 to 70% effective, which is tremendous for the flu shot. But, that’s why it’s so important, the more people that get it, the higher that vaccination protection goes,” said Hall.
With various strains of the virus, Hall said that reaffirms the importance for everyone with the exception of infants under six months to receive a flu shot annually.
“It’s very smart, it’s always changing, it’s always adapting and finding ways to attack humans. Our scientists are also very, very smart so they are looking at ways to fight back at that,” explained Hall.
The Fayette County health department is sponsoring a free flu shot clinic October tenth from one until seven at Fayette Mall.
