Heavy flooding which has overrun several eastern Kentucky communities has only intensified food insecurity issues. God’s Pantry Food Bank, based in Lexington, serves 50 counties in central and eastern Kentucky.
God’s Pantry CEO Mike Halligan says product has been rolling into a number of counties over the last week and a half. “What we often see during times of natural disaster is that folks that are experiencing hunger have more an acute need and others who don’t typically experience hunger now find themselves thrust into food insecurity,” said Halligan.
Hallingan said that can come from losing an entire home, living in shelters, or not have energy to prepare meals. In addition to food, Hallingan noted 5000 cases of water have been delivered to hard hit areas in the last four days. Halligan added the food bank assistance has gone to families in Breathitt, Clay, Estill, Magoffin, Powell, and Lee Counties. Food and cash donations are being accepted at godspantry.org.
