Much of the public health focus this summer across Kentucky involves coronavirus prevention and response. Fayette County Health Department Environmental Supervisor Luke Mathias says that’s certainly been the case in Lexington.
So, the veteran health department environmentalist said it’s meant less attention on mosquito breeding. “So far, we haven’t begun trapping for mosquitoes and we haven’t, to date, sprayed for mosquitoes. Most of that, of course, is due to all the additional things that we’re being taxed to do with the COVID-19 response,” said Mathias.
Mathias noted health department teams are still responding to complaints and baiting or larviciding stagnant waters. Mathias added this summer there hasn’t been a major emergence of a mosquito borne illness. He said mosquito related complaints haven’t been reported in high numbers.?
