Dry conditions across central Kentucky have led to a greater number of leaves falling off trees in September. Lexington’s leaf collection program is scheduled to begin the first week of November.
Lexington Streets and Roads Director Rob Allen briefed the Environmental Quality and Public Works Committee Tuesday. Allen said setting the pickup schedule brings with it certain challenges every year. “It takes a minimum of six weeks to serve 90,000 households, so if you start too early folks were left having to use the cart and the bags. If you start too late, the leaves could degrade and get into the storm sewer systems. We’re constantly trying to evaluate. Are we starting too soon? Are we in the wrong area?" Asked Allen.
Allen said the leaf collection for houses with existing garbage collection is designed to supplement homeowner efforts to pick up leaves. Plans call for leaf collection to end by December 20th.?
