Public Service Commission Approves Kentucky American Rate Hike

The Kentucky Public Service Commission has granted new rates for customers of Kentucky American Water.  The order issued Thursday sets out a lower rate than the utility requested.

The PSC approved amount is about one-third less than what Kentucky American requested.  The average monthly residential bill for usage of just under 3,900 gallons will go up by five dollars 21 cents.  The new rates take effect Friday.

After twice rejecting Kentucky American’s proposals in prior rate cases, the regulatory panel gave the go ahead for a new qualified infrastructure program.  That’s expected to accelerate the replacement of aging water mains.

This program will be funded through a separate surcharge on customers’ bills.  Kentucky American serves about 130,000 customers in central Kentucky.
