Model Laboratory Schools Principal John Williamson is cautiously optimistic a new school complex could become a reality over the next five years. Governor Beshear included $90 million in his budget proposal to build a new Model facility in Richmond. Williamson said the need for teacher preparation extends beyond EKU and the state as a national issue. “But anything that we can do as a Commonwealth to say we value that and we want to support it, I would think that the House of Representatives and the Senate would be onboard to help perpetuate a stronger education because it will perpetuate a stronger economy for the state,” said Williamson.
Williamson said General Assembly affirmation came when it passed legislation designating Model as the Commonwealth’s laboratory school. He noted Model’s current home is more than 60 years old. Williamson added most, if not all kindergarten through 12th grade facilities across the state, have been replaced in that six-decade time period.
The school administrator admitted the Model schools’ replacement project will be one of several proposed for university campuses. Williamson envisions funding would cover new pre-k through the 12th grade classrooms, a cafeteria, gym, and auditorium.
