The City of Lexington is reporting the attempted theft of millions of dollars.
According to city officials, late last week it was noticed that approximately four million dollars in federal rental and transitional housing funds was missing. The money was supposed to be transferred to the Community Action Council. Instead, police believe someone outside of the city government made an electronic transfer to a private bank account.
The funds were tracked to three separate wire transfers and the account was frozen by the financial institution.
Commissioner of Finance Erin Hensley said the government’s financial system was not affected. The city is working to recover the $4 million so the Community Action Council can continue to provide uninterrupted housing assistance.
The city has asked the Lexington Police Financial Crimes Unit to investigate the theft.
