Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton opened the first in-person City Council work session in more than a year with high praise for city workers and local residents.
During a difficult 15-month global pandemic, Gorton said the city lost 322 people along with suffering severe economic blows, but a steadfast attitude prevailed. “Our people here, and I include everybody in this Chamber, I include everyone who lives here, they didn’t lose their optimism, even in the darkest time, that things would get better,” said Gorton.
Gorton said the city forged partnerships with other organizations that had never been done before. She said people found ways to cope through walks, reading books, and helping others, even when they faced fears and uncertainties. Gorton said a citywide recognition of what Lexington experienced during the pandemic is planned for later this summer.
