Part of busy downtown Lexington Street to close for sewer work

A portion of a busy street in downtown Lexington will be shut down Monday for an estimated three to four months so contractors can replace a sewer line. Nancy Albright is the city’s commissioner for Environmental Quality and Public Works. She said signs will go up this week informing motorists that West Maxwell Street from Oliver Lewis Way to South Broadway will be closed on weekdays.
“We are trying to leave it open whenever there's not construction, so that the weekends, during UK graduation, during Fayette County school graduation, we will have the contractor not working those days.”
West Maxwell Street is a block away from Rupp Arena and not much further from the University of Kentucky. Albright said the work will be done between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
“It'll kind of just move in logical sections down Maxwell, so there will be some local access opportunities during each phase of construction.”
