Kentucky cities and counties can now apply for grants to help control animal populations.
The Kentucky Animal Control Advisory Board has made funds available that municipalities can use to spay and neuter cats and dogs.
Michael Grant is the grant proposal manager with the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. He said a little bit of help can go a long way.
“They're very small grants, $1,075 to county governments or city governments. They can be used to help folks pay for spay/neuter procedures for their pets.”
He said this program allows cities and counties to use the funds as best they see fit, but there is a population that many choose.
“The counties can work with your local animal shelter to set up a program where the stray cats or dogs can be spayed or neutered before going to owners.”
Grant said Kentucky has a problem with the number stray and feral animals throughout the state.
Governments may partner with non-profit organizations to obtain the best use of resources.
Grant said that the awards will be given out based on need in the applicants' area. He also said Kentucky has a problem with the number of stray and feral animals across the state. The application deadline is July 15th.
