Stacy Thurman was unopposed when she ran for mayor of Midway two years ago. The following August, another unexpected thing happened – the fulltime job as director of the Woodford County Public Library opened and she accepted the offer. Monday night, she stepped down as mayor, telling the city council the two jobs and her responsibilities as a mother of two teens had affected her mental health. Her successor is two-term former Mayor Grayson Vandegrift.
“I give her a ton of credit for – that's inspirational honesty, if you ask me. To be that honest about it and say, ‘Look, this is this is too much.’ I give her kudos. And she told me it was a great relief for her.”
Vandegrift was the unanimous pick of the council to succeed Thurman, a longtime friend he greatly admires.
“If more public officials were like Stacy, half of the world's problems would have already been solved by now. Or they never would have started in the first place, let's put it that way. She is kind, honest, generous and just one of the greatest listeners I've ever seen.”
At the end of the council meeting in which Thurman resigned, she received a standing ovation from everyone in the room.
