The city of Corbin will receive a U.S. Transportation Department grant worth more than 166-thousand dollars. The money comes from the federal “Safer Streets For All” program and is a portion of 24-point-7 million the commonwealth will get to improve roads. Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus said she learned the grant bid was successful Monday.
“I was really happy to hear that. I had been waiting patiently. We applied for it several months ago, so it seemed like the process took a long time, and I was starting to lose hope, kind of. So, I was really happy to hear.”
Razmus said the grant will fund an action plan for a new, two-mile bicycle path in in a lower socioeconomic area of east Corbin that will link the city library, pool, dog park and other public places.
“And I really had been wanting to tie that whole area together with a little bike route, with Sharing the Road, and just have it nice and well-drawn out, where people could understand where they could bike safely.”
Razmus says the city will also apply for grants to fund the project’s construction.
