A northern Kentucky Army National Guard military police company will be deactivated this weekend. Soldiers of the 940th MP Company will gather Sunday in Walton for an official ceremony.
Kentucky Deputy Adjutant General Scott Campbell said it’s all part of an Army realignment strategy. “I guess the Army looked at it like we don’t need niche military police companies that just do one focused thing. We need companies that can do the full range of military police operations,” said Campbell.
Campbell added the company has been a detention-focused unit. Campbell said it’s not about scaling down U.S. military numbers. “I don’t think cost came into it. They’re just always looking for ways to reorganize and be more efficient. And, you know, the Army’s overall strength is not going to go down because of this,” explained Campbell
About a third of the 150 soldiers will remain in Walton. The unit though will be transferred to Murray. The affected soldiers will have the opportunity to either move to a new position within another MP unit or re-classify into a new Military Occupational Specialty.
