LIHEAP offering assistance for homes with heating emergencies for the winter season

A financial assistance program for Kentucky households facing home heating emergencies starts this week.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, is helping homes facing a loss of heat, low fuel supply, or eviction due to unpaid utility bills. Eligible homes include those making up to 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, which depend on the size of the household.

Those benefits are paid directly to each home’s utility provider and cover the amount needed to address the emergency. Those affected can also reapply for each emergency until they reach their household’s maximum benefit.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested can apply at their local Community Action Agency office or by calling the Community Action Network at 800-456-3452.

Applicants must bring:

  • Proof of their social security number or permanent residence card for each household member
  • Proof of all household members’ income from last month
  • The most current electric bill, a statement from the landlord if electric is included with rent or a statement from the utility company if the household participates in a pre-pay electric program
  • The account number for the household’s main hearing fuel sources and electric bill

LIHEAP’s Winter Crisis program is available in all 120 Kentucky counties through March 27.
