UK’s Voss says Massie's independence could help ward off Trump threat

Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie could face his greatest threat yet next year – from fellow Republican President Trump and his MAGA political action committee. Trump has vowed vengeance against Massie for opposing the president’s budget and last week’s bombing of Iran. Stephen Voss is an associate professor of political science at the University of Kentucky specializing in American politics.
“The last challenges Thomas Massie faced were really more shots across the bow, rather than attempts to go after him. He didn't face opponents of the profile, or opponents with the backing that would be needed to challenge an incumbent member of Congress under most circumstances.”
Voss said Massie, who’s been the 4th District congressman since 2013, is giving his constituents the sort of “Liberty Republican” representation they’ve asked for in the state legislature.
“Massey's district may have the sort of Republican electorate that would stick with him over principle rather than go toward Donald Trump over party.”
Voss said Massie’s independence is a rarity in Congress these days. Massie’s office did not respond to an interview request from WEKU.
