A University of Kentucky research professor will give an online presentation Thursday afternoon that’s free and open to the public. Carrie Oser’s subject is “Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Among People Involved in the Criminal Legal System in Rural Areas.”

“I think that social networks are important, but overlooked factors in addiction health services and social networks are how people interact with each other, the ties among people and that can influence their behaviors and access to services.”

Oser said they’re also working on solutions.

“We are developing an intervention right now to work on building social supports for people through interventions, that's one opportunity. The other opportunity is through accessing peer support specialists, recovery coaches and mutual support group meetings that helps build your recovery network.”

Oser said that can lead to better outcomes for people struggling with substance use disorders. Thursday’s program begins at 1:30 p.m.
