Public Workers React to Latest Pension Bill

Stu Johnson

On the day legislative leaders from both the House and Senate offered details of the new public pension reform bill, reaction came from those directly affected by proposed changes.  It happened by circumstance.

Lawmakers making their way from the capitol annex to their house and senate chambers may have found green shirted public employees on both sides of the underground tunnel.  They were expressing opposition to the latest version of pension reforms.  Ron Richmond is with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees.  “We planned this probably four or five months ago, but it just happened that the bill dropped just yesterday for something that impacts our people greatly.  So, we just happened to be here because of our lobby day,” said Richmond.

In addition to school support staff from Louisville, Richmond says there were also union workers from the city’s water utility, and Lexington corrections.
