Ky. House GOP Budget Maintains Bevin's Funding Cuts to Higher Ed.

Kentucky House Republicans unveiled their budget proposal Tuesday. The house GOP strategy seeks to modify Governor Bevin’s suggested two-year spending plan.  However, Minority Whip Jim DeCesare says the proposal maintains Bevin’s proposed funding reductions for post-secondary education.  “The cuts remain intact, but in hopes of easing some of those reductions, we’ve implemented some policy changes that would allow universities more flexibility on how to spend their own money,” said DeCesare.

DeCesare says it’s difficult to say what the final budget will look like.  “We’ve got a long ways to go in just a couple of weeks, so we’ll see how it all shakes out," he said. "I hope in the end, that some of the policy initiatives that house republicans have put on the table will be part of the discussions going forward. That’s the ultimate goal.”

The House GOP budget plan fully restores funding for family resource and youth service centers and sets up a state employee benefit reserve trust fund as a dedicated source for the state retirement system.  The proposal would cut state funding to Planned Parenthood.  House Minority Floor Leader Jeff Hoover says he’s hopeful the plan will get a hearing on the house floor.    ?
