Special Needs Diploma Clears General Assembly

A bill creating an alternative diploma for special needs students in Kentucky is just a signature away from becoming law. Senator Dennis Parrett's bill soared through the General Assembly. It passed the state Senate 36-0 last week and cleared the House 100-0 Tuesday. Currently, special needs students only receive a certificate upon graduating high school. Parrett’s bill would allow those students to get a diploma and give them better opportunities for work after high school.

Governor Steve Beshear is expected to sign the bill into law. It will take effect in the next school year.

Parrett says he hopes in the future to pass legislation allowing former students to apply for the new diplomas.
