EKU Continues Effort to Move to Higher Athletic Division

ess.eku.edu

Eastern Kentucky University officials have plans to move into a higher athletic division. EKU Board of Regents Chair Craig Turner says the goal is to move up to the Football Bowl Series. He says whether or not it happens this year is not the issue.  "I think the message is that we're elevating our athletic program, our expectations are higher and we assume we'll also have better results,” says Turner. “The more branding we can do for the university, this is just one of the other mechanisms to keep the university in the forefront."

Turner says in hindsight, it would have been preferable to make the change 35 years ago.  "You know the truth is if you look back on the history of the school, the appropriate time to probably make that move was back in the Roy Kidd era,” he said. “We have a lot of success now, but you know we had a lot of national success back then and that probably would have been the easiest time to make the move."

Turner says the school should know by the fall where it stands in relation to a division change. He says even if EKU never moves up, the school will be better prepared in its current athletic conference, the OVC.?
