Keeneland Grads join the field for Saturday's Belmont Stakes

kentuckyderby.com

Seven thoroughbreds sold at Keeneland, including Preakness winner ‘Oxbow,’ are entered in this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.  In fact, half the field at Belmont passed through the auction ring at Keeneland.  Jim Goodman, who directs mutuals and simulcasting at the Lexington track, says many Triple-Crown contenders are sold there in September.

“2011 September sales is obviously the one where all of our buyers look for their Derby horses two years down the road, so the same thing will happen in 2014, the 2012 September Keeneland Sales graduates are prominent in the 2014 Kentucky Derby picture.  That’s just the way it is,” said Goodman.

In addition to Oxbow, the other Keeneland-grads in the Belmont are Frac Daddy, Overanalyze, Midnight Taboo, Revolutionary, Will Take Charge and Palace Malice.  Goodman says racing began in Keeneland in 1936 with the first Thoroughbred sales event under a tent in 1938.

“People recognized that we’re sitting here in the middle of the Bluegrass with the best place to raise horses and they were taking them elsewhere to sell.  So, some very forward thinking people back in the early days of Keeneland decided that we would have sales here and it’s grown to be the biggest sale in the world for Thoroughbred horses,“ added Goodman.

Kentucky Derby-winner Orb is the favorite at three-to-two in the Belmont. The race runs Saturday evening at about 6:30.
