UK HealthCare received a mock shipment of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine this week as part of a national vaccine distribution exercise.
UK HealthCare pharmacy received shipments on Thursday containing supplies like syringes and alcohol swabs needed to administer Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. The shipments did not contain the actual vaccine.
The vaccine is still waiting on approval by the U.S. Food and Drug administration. That decision is expected on December 10.
Philip Almeter, UK HealthCare Chief Pharmacist says initially, the university expects to receive 1,950 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Those inoculated will also need a booster shot.
“So the Pfizer vaccine recommends a booster shot 21 days later. They are recommending that we give our amount everybody who we have put in that that Phase 1A initial group to get it,” Almeter said. “And plan to receive the booster shipment before it's due.”
Kentucky’s Phase 1A vaccine plans show hospital health care workers, front line emergency medical service personnel and long-term care employees and residents will be some of the first to receive the coronavirus vaccine.
