Three Madison County Farmers Markets Participate in National Event

Eastern Kentucky University celebrated National Farmers Market Week Thursday with three local groups joining together to offer fresh produce to the Richmond community.  The weekly summertime market at Eastern has grown just like the fruits and vegetables on display.

Bluegrass music sets the stage as shoppers make their way through the marketplace for National Farmers Market Week .

The Berea, Madison County and Harvest 859 markets set up fruit and vegetable stands in the Alumni Coliseum parking lot.  Not all participants came from area farms.  Josh Reynolds is a local grower. “I made a deal with a friend of mine.  I cut their grass.  She lets me grow my peppers on her properties, so that’s where I’ve been growing my peppers,” said Reynolds.

EKU Coordinator Tammy Cornett says the weekly sale of produce has blossomed over the past three years.  “Three years ago we were inside of campus, we had four farmers and about 75 visitors.  We moved over here to Alumni Coliseum parking lot last year and average attendance is about 300 and we’re averaging about 15 farmers here on a regular every-Thursday basis,” noted Cornett.

The farmers market will move to Irvine McDowell Park in Richmond next week.  Debra Fauts with the Berea Farmers Market said their program runs year round.  She sais sometimes the winters are tough and people just want to get out among folks.
