Thieves Corner The Market On Quarters

Lexington Police have recovered a large chunk of change, in fact, $1,452 in quarters.

Police say five people allegedly broke into coin operated air pumps the past several months to steal quarters. This past weekend, a police officer patrolling the Elkhorn Drive area observed a man taking money from the air machine at a Speedway gas station.

The man, later identified as 37-year-old Joseph Michael Estep was then seen getting into a truck driven by 33- year-old Melissa Lear. When officers made contact with the two, about ten dollars in quarters fell from Estep’s lap as he got out of the truck. Officers found hundreds of more dollars in quarters along with a stolen license plate, pliers, and other tools. Three other men, Wesley Jackson, Nathan Pelfrey and Steven Pelfrey are accused of similar crimes.

By the way, $1,452 would be 5,808 quarters.
