Lexington's East End Daffodil Drift Recognized

Stu Johnson

Lexington’s East End Neighborhood is showing off its daffodil drift as part of the America in Bloom program.  America In Bloom is a non-profit organization which promotes community enhancement through flowers, plants, and trees.

A special ceremony this past weekend recognized 2020 America In Bloom Community Champion, Lexington Historian Yvonne Giles.  Giles said the flowering spot is beautiful for the East End community. “It has been characterized as an un-attractive neighborhood and I know otherwise.  I see the beauty.  Other people have seen the trash and all the things that they want to complain about.  But, this they cannot deny.  It’s a point of interest and a point of beauty that will be here forever,” said Giles.

The ceremony also included recognition for former Lexington Council Member Jake Gibbs who died just over a year ago.  His wife Anita Courtney said the man with a beard, a leather jacket, and a motorcycle loved flowers.   “Our oldest daughter is named Delia Rose and he always called her Rosebud and our youngest daughter is named Delaney and he called her Delany Daffodil.  His brother used to tease him that if he had other kids he could use other plant names like Fleebane, and Sneezeweed, and Ragwart.  So that would mean a lot to him,” said Courtney.

Another planting event for daffodils is planned later this year.
