First term Lexington Council Member David Kloiber has won committee approval to look for additional ways to address gentrification concerns. Kloiber’s resolution calls on the Planning Division to use all tools to tackle housing scarcity, which could include a quicker review of the city’s comprehensive plan.
The councilman said escalating housing prices are intensifying inequities. “And this higher median sale price is the driving force behind an increased gentrification as housing prices increase, it becomes more desirable to re-develop and for, as we said earlier, these wealthier individuals to displace poorer residents,” said Kloiber.
Some council members said the city’s Planning Division is already moving in this direction and aware of housing challenges. Vice Mayor Steve Kay expressed concern, fearing the resolution could be used to justify actions not supported by the entire city council. “Is it going to be used by anybody to, for example, talk about. well, yes, this justifies support for ADU’s. This justifies support for expanding the urban service boundary,” explained Kay.
ADU’s are accessory dwelling units, also known as backyard cottages.
The matter will be put before the entire council for further discussion and possible action.
