Governor Beshear Not Ruling Out Special Session On Police Reforms

Governor Beshear says he wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to a special legislative session to consider law enforcement related reforms.  During his daily briefing Tuesday, the governor was asked about interest by some legislators to see him convene lawmakers to Frankfort.

Beshear said he’d be willing to work with legislative leaders and others on that issue. “If we can get something done, that’s something that I certainly would consider and I’m willing to work with anybody on legislation that gonna help move our world ahead and get us to a better place for everybody,” said Beshear.

The governor said he’s talked with Senate President Robert Stivers about the lawmaker’s no-knock warrant bill as well as one offered by Louisville Representative Attica Scott.

The general assembly is scheduled to meet in regular session the first of January.

The Commonwealth’s global horse racing moment in ‘My Old Kentucky Home’ typically comes on the first Saturday in May.  This year, coronavirus played a key role in seeing the run for the roses moved to Labor Day weekend.  When asked if he will attend the festivities at Churchill Downs Saturday, Governor Beshear said the answer is ‘no.’  “I think it’s important in every instance that I can to make sure that I don’t put myself as governor ahead of the people of Kentucky.  So, if we’re asking the people of Kentucky to watch it at home, I’m going to watch it at home, too,” Beshear explained.

The governor said there will be a video presentation for the trophy.  Beshear said it’s important to model groups of ten or less on Derby Day and on Labor Day as well.  The governor reported 807 coronavirus cases last night and 15 additional deaths.
