Governor Beshear: Fall Sports Will Require Crowd Control

Governor Beshear says public universities across Kentucky are expected to use various means to track coronavirus cases as the fall semester proceeds.

The governor said using a positivity percentage can’t be the sole measuring stick. “If you want to establish a campus positivity rate, you not only have to test a significant of that campus, but you got to keep doing it.  And then you can’t do a calculation based on something two weeks ago. We have a seven day rolling average,” said Beshear.

Governor Beshear said it’s also important to look at density of housing on campus and how the virus could be spreading.

The Kentucky State School Board is scheduled Friday to discuss the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s decision to move forward with fall sports.  Governor Beshear has said he will not overturn the KHSAA’s decision.  During his briefing, the governor said limits on the number of spectators will be needed.  “It can’t be normal.  It can’t be normal and if there are any crowds you got to be willing to kick somebody’s parent out if they’re not wearing a mask.  So, we’ve got to think really carefully about that beforehand,” noted Beshear.

The governor reported 775 new coronavirus cases Thursday along with eight deaths.  He said the state’s positivity rate stands are 4.8%.
