Fayette School Board Looks To October 19th For Limited Return To Class

Small groups of elementary aged students in Lexington could return to school for limited focused instruction on October 19th under a motion approved Monday night by the Fayette County School Board.  It's contingent on the board seeing a phased-in targeted services plan by October 12th

Schools Superintendent Manny Caulk said his staff had been working on a hybrid model until Lexington saw a red zone designation last week, indicating a higher level of the spread of coronavirus. “We’ve been pushing forward with the hybrid and someone says targeted services.  Yes, because we just had to look at that as an option.  That’s not something we considered because we weren’t even moving in that direction,” said Caulk.

The board discussed phasing in older students in a similar way with an eye toward a hybrid model where students would be in class two days a week and home for three.   Board Member Tyler Murphy said last night more teacher involvement is needed to make a return to in-school learning work.  “To me, it’s very difficult to move forward when we don’t know the precise details of how a return to either targeted services or in-person instruction is going to look,” noted Murphy.

Board Member Ray Daniels added it was important to give the community a date for a return to some form of in-class learning.

The board’s action allows for continued participation of Fayette County extra-curricular activities and sports.?
